wedge MIR .. VSL releases new MIR (Multiple Impulse Response) Reverb product.
Technology
• Highly specialized impulses of line arrays in 60° steps in six horizontal directions as well as upwards and downwards.
• Up to 40 sectors per stage for instrument placement, with interpolation between sectors for seamless transitions.
• Up to 5,000 individually recorded impulse responses for each room, depending on the size of the stage and the number of microphone positions.
• Instrument-specific algorithms according to individual directional frequency profiles.
• Four-channel Ambisonics recordings for output in various stereo and surround formats (up to 8 output channels).
• Recorded from up to four carefully selected positions – from the conductor’s rostrum as well as from the audience perspective.
Ease-of-Use
• Intuitive graphic user interface with innovative multi-parameter control icon.
• Real-time playing mode (low latency for arranging) and mixing mode (higher latency due to larger buffer size for calculating up to 20,000 convolutions during mix-down).
• VST/AU inserts for each instrument channel as well as the master channel.
• Character Presets for quick timbral changes, available for most Vienna Instruments.
• Advanced GUI features such as Instrument Grouping, Hide Icon, Scroll Zooming etc.

wedge VSL .. Vienna Ensemble Pro

* VSL release VE Pro as 32 and 64 bit for Windows and Mac OS X (Including the PPC Mac)

* New Features
• 3rd party VSTi/AU hosting (multichannel)
Instantiate Vienna Instruments along with other 3rd party VST and AU instruments from Spectrasonics, Native Instruments, and more; supporting plug-ins with multiple outputs.
• Preserve Instance
Disconnect Vienna Ensemble PRO from your sequencer while keeping all of your instruments and samples loaded, and re-connect to a new cue or project without loading again.
• Mixer Automation
Use AU/VST/RTAS automation from your sequencer to control Vienna Ensemble PRO’s mixer (volume, pan and sends).
• Redesigned user interface
A sleek, calm new design that’s easy on the eye.
• Channel strip and mixer strip sizing
Switch between wide or narrow channel strips for optimal viewing and saving screen space.
• Customized viframe preset for Epic Orchestra Pack.
• Link Pages
When activated, all Vienna Instruments GUIs will show the same right pane window when switching tracks, e.g., the “Patch Assign” page.
• Optimize All
Clean up your RAM by purging all unused samples of all instantiated Vienna Instruments at once!
• Selective Project Merging
Assemble the parts of various existing projects into one new template.
• Multiple keyrange spans per instrument.
• Audio input channels
Route external audio directly into the mixer (stand-alone mode only).
• Audio input/output routing
Windows: Select active channels of an audio device to improve communication with other audio applications. Audio channels of an audio device can as well be used by other audio applications when deactivated in Vienna Ensemble PRO.
• Multiple Undo/Redo
• Slave mode host tempo synchronization.
• Dual architecture servers
Run 64-bit and 32-bit Vienna Ensemble PRO Servers side-by-side on the same computer which makes it easy to integrate 32-bit 3rd party instruments into your templates.
• Full Mac OS X 64-bit support
Utilize the full memory of your Mac.
• Improved loopback performance (Mac)
Running Vienna Ensemble PRO Server on the same machine as your sequencer now puts much less strain on your system and will perform more reliably.
• Hosting of Cocoa AU instruments and effects (32-bit and 64-bit)
Vienna Ensemble PRO can host both Carbon and Cocoa AU plug-ins, making it one of the first hosts to handle 64-bit AU’s on the Mac.
• VST3 and RTAS connector plug-ins
Vienna Ensemble PRO supports up to 32 MIDI ports and 128 audio ports per instance.
• PC server interface plug-in: VST/VST3 (64-bit and 32-bit).
• PC server/stand-alone: 32-bit and 64-bit.
• Mac server interface plug-in: RTAS (32-bit Intel, PPC); AU/VST/VST3 (32-bit and 64-bit Intel, 32-bit PPC).
• Mac server/stand-alone: 32-bit and 64-bit for both Intel and PPC Macs (Intel recommended. PPC not actively supported).

wedge Composer Showcase 89 - Chris Kazmier

* Chris Kazmier piece - "Theme from BLED".

Theme from Bled
Libraries used:
VSL Strings I and II, VSL Appassionata Strings I, East West Voices of Passion, Project SAM True Strike 1 and 2, Sonic Implants (now Sonnivox) Brass, East West
Storm Drums, and RMX.

This is the opening title and credits music. Wanted to make this sound like a legend. The movie is about this sap from a very rare tree and if you smoke it you will
get visions and "expand" your mind. At least thats what is told to you. You are really being transported to another plane of existence where a vamplre/Incubus will
feed on you so he may cross over to our side. The sap is very addictive so the more you use it the more the Incubus can feed and turn you into a Incubus
because in order for him to leave he must have a replacement. During this time of feeding and transformation both sides are crossing over in and out.

I pitched this cue to the Director and Exec Producer late one night. They have been listening to the tmp tracks all day, I think from the Borne film series. They
loved it and decided to redo the graphic opening to match the music. With the theme in place I was able to get all my cues, based and expanded, from this theme.

End Credits
Libraries used:
VSL Strings I and II, VSL Appassionata Strings I, East West Voices of Passion, Project SAM True Strike 1 and 2, Sonic Implants (now Sonnivox) Brass, East West Storm
Drums beats (I found one from the Colossus library that was from the original Storm Drum recordings), East West Symphonic Choirs, and I think an Ivory Bosendorfer
290.

Wanted to close the movie with a big bang and then end the cue with a return to the theme just with piano and strings. Using the E/W Symphonic Choirs Wordbuilder
software I was able to type in some nice sounding latin phrases for the different groups (STAB) and play them together and separate. The library was very
taxing on my little 1.8 dual G5 so there was no way of doing this all in one Logic session. I was using a lot of fast  string runs from the VSL libs and brass stabs from the
Sonnivox libs to pick up the excitement in the cue.

The Reverbs are from Logic 8's 5.1 Space Designer. I do have Altiverb and us it all the time but on this I found the 5.1 Space Designer came off darker so I kept it in.
The 5.1 stems were mixed down in to 2 channel and then mastered using an L3LL Multimaximizer, I find it real easy to use and you can really push it.

The movie was just picked up by Grindstone/Lionsgate and will be released in 09.

wedge Composer Showcase 90 - Jef de Corte

* Jef de Cortes piece "Voices of Hope" from Relics VIII

'I decided to give the flute and oboe a bit more to play, and I added a gypsy violin for the solo at the end of the middle part.
The gypsy violin is from East West, because my VSL does not contain gypsy-like sampled violin (I think these are included in the complete solo strings).'

wedge Composer Showcase 91 - Charles Green

* Charles Green's piece "Rememberance"

'I really didn't use much EQ and only a single Altiverb.  I still have a learning curve on how to use it correctly.  I once read that if you orchestrate correctly, that EQ in classical music is not all that necessary.  I also read somewhere on the VSL site a year or so ago that their demos didn't use EQ. I also used all Logic plug-ins and no power panning in the original mix.  I did set up instrument busses which control the amount of Reverb each section obtains in order to control depth.  After the song was completed. Vienna Suite was introduced.  I bounced each track into audio and applied some of the tools.'
